More than 100 Queensland primary schools will battle it out for the chance to be crowned state champion at the Samsung Primary Schools Cup at Ipswich Netball Association this weekend.
The tournament is the biggest school-based primary school competition in Queensland and will see more than 1000 games of netball contested in an inclusive competition format featuring female, male and mixed teams aged between grades four to six.
New Zealand Silver Ferns legend and Netball Queensland General Manager of Community and Sport Development Leigh Gibbs said the competition would feature schools from as far afield as Townsville, Cherbourg, Roma and Stanthorpe.
“The Samsung Primary Schools Cup is a wonderful chance for kids from all over the state to further their passion for netball or fall in love with the game for the first time,” Gibbs said.
“Over two days of competition a Queensland champion will be crowned – a prestigious honour that will be hugely exciting for a lucky school.
“The competition also provides a final chance for male and female athletes to participate together in a competitive environment before they split into gender-based competition at 12-years-old.”
Three time ANZ Championship winner and current Queensland Firebirds star Caitlyn Nevins will be at the closing ceremony to present the medals to the champions.
Gibbs said she hoped the tournament would bring new faces to the game of netball and encourage participants to continue their development when the association seasons begin in early 2017.
“The Samsung Primary Schools Cup gives athletes of all abilities a chance to enjoy being part of a team and be exposed to the great grounding netball has in friendships on and off the court,” she said.
“Though only one team will walk away the winner, the flow-on effect for interest in our sport at club level will benefit greatly from the great experience teams will have.
“Netball Queensland wishes every competing team all the very best and we look forward to seeing you out on court this weekend.”
The Samsung Primary Schools Cup runs from 7.15am to 4pm on Saturday 15 October 2016 and 8am to 3pm on Sunday 16 October 2016 (grand final at 2.30pm) at Ipswich Netball Association. Entry is free.
