Fusion record loss, draw with Waratahs in ANL openers

The Queensland Fusion endured a tough opening to the 2016 Australian Netball League, falling to a slick New South Wales Waratahs outfit 68-46 on Saturday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and backing up with a 51-51 draw with the same opposition at Ormiston College on Sunday.

Taking the court after the Firebirds conjured a stirring victory against the Swifts on Saturday, the Fusion struggled to find their feet early despite the presence of impressive Firebirds trio Beryl Friday, Mahalia Cassidy and Hulita Haukinima.

The NSW outfit led from start to finish, showing superior speed and ball movement to win by 22 goals. Firebirds young gun Beryl Friday led from the front for the Fusion, posting 21 from 28 shooting.

On Sunday the Fusion took to the court with renewed vigour. Firebirds stars Chelsea Lemke, Laura Clemesha, Cassidy and Friday took charge as the Queenslanders led at all three intervals before the Waratahs fought back in the final stanza to snatch a draw.

The Fusion take on the Western Sting on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May in ANL round three at the State Netball Centre in Western Australia.
