AFTER months of trials and rigorous training sessions, the 2013 21 and Under Queensland team has been announced.
Initial trials were held in October before the final 12-player list was named yesterday at the State Netball Centre.
Netball Queensland Athlete Development Officer Sheree Smith said players gave their all despite the searing heat.
“Conditions were almost unbearable however it didn’t stop players putting on some impressive performances,” Smith said.
“Selectors have chosen a strong team which is more than capable of clinching the National Championships title, as well as scoring individual spots in Australia’s 21 and Under squad.”
Last year’s most valuable player and 2013 Mission Queensland Firebirds defender Laura Clemesha will line up in Queensland colours for a fourth year at the 21 and Under level.
Toowoomba-born Clemesha said there’s a great buzz within the newly named side.
“I was the young one for the first couple of years but last year I had a bit more of a leadership role so every year’s been different,” she said.
“It should be a great championship and all the girls are really ready to hit the court to start preparing.”
Gold Coast native Gretel Tippett returns to the side for her second National Netball Championships after switching sports from basketball.
Gretel, the sister of AFL footballers Kurt Tippett and Joel Tippett, is a former Australian 19/U international basketballer and WNBL player.
The 2013 21/U National Championships will be held in Canberra from the 12th-17th March.
