Queensland Fusion posted back to back wins against Territory Storm to end week one of their Australian Netball League (ANL) campaign on top of the ladder.
The Fusion beat the Storm 47-27 in their first match on Saturday night at Ormiston College, before backing up on Sunday with Firebirds stars Kristen Oxenford and Abigail Latu-Meafou to win 60-38.
Fusion star Alexia Baker – a training partner with the Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds – said she was very pleased with the direction the team was moving in.
“It was really awesome getting the two wins for the first round of ANL – it was really exciting for our squad moving forward,” Baker said.
“It gives us confidence moving into the games coming up. Especially on that first day, it was great to know if we don’t have any Firebirds we can win games with our regular players.
“The Storm were a good team and had some great players in there. Their combinations were strong and the training partners for the Lightning made a big impact – Dom Scott put out a good performance and so did Ash Unie. We’ll take a lot of confidence from our performances.”
After a disappointing season in 2016, the new-look Fusion are looking to emulate the club’s best ever result of a grand final appearance in 2014.
Baker said the start would be the perfect launching point for the club’s fresh faces.
It was really exciting getting the girls who have never played ANL on the court. It’s such an amazing achievement for them to get out there, have a run and do really well,” she said.
