Queensland Fusion has appointed 2016 assistant coach Tracey Jeanes-Fraser head coach for the 2017 and 2018 Australian Netball League (ANL) seasons.
The former Queensland under 17s and under 21s head coach was offered the role following the resignation of Jenny Brazel, who will dedicate more time to her position as Firebirds assistant coach ahead of next year’s inaugural National Netball League (NNL).
Jeanes-Fraser said with NNL squad lists being trimmed to 10 players from the ANZ Championship’s 12, Fusion players were closer than ever to getting a call up onto the big stage.
“I’m ecstatic, honoured and privileged to be given this position,” Jeanes-Fraser said.
“ANL is the breeding ground for the next Diamonds. With the under 21s no longer, the girls in ANL will be aspiring to elite national representation like World Youth Cup.
“There will be opportunity to have conversations with Rose (Jencke) and Jen throughout the season as to what they’re wanting and then get out there and produce it so they can draw from the Fusion talent pool if required.”
In addition to supporting the Firebirds, the Fusion play a major role in transitioning players from state underage and Queensland State Netball League competitions into the elite environment.
Jeanes-Fraser said she could not wait for the season to get underway and to help bring the best out of her side.
“I’ve loved working under Jen. We worked really well and she really taught me to back myself,” she said.
“Previously I’ve tried to emulate what Jen has tried to do with the Fusion and what Rose has done with the Firebirds in the Queensland underage sides. The idea is to take the culture from that top end, continue it through and make the best Queensland players we can.
“When I coach, I’m firm, flexible and am extremely dedicated to finding the silver lining. If we can find the silver lining in each athlete, we can mould the team together around each individual’s strengths.”
