Qld Fusion competes in ANL this weekend

Queensland Fusion will represent the state in the 2013 Australian Netball League (ANL) competition with Round 1 being played at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July.

The 15-member quad is led by experienced Coach Kylee Byrne for the second consecutive season. Last night, Ms Byrne made the announcement that Meegan Bruggemann will Captain the team, with Jacqui Russell as Vice Captain.

Four of the eight games in the Week 1 draw will be played at the USC (Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs). Details are as follows:

Saturday 6 July: Western Sting v AIS at 4.30pm / Queensland Fusion v Territory Storm at 6.30pm

Sunday 7 July: Western Sting v Territory Storm at 10am / AIS v Queensland Fusion at 12pm

TEAM PROFILE:

  • Kylee Byrne returns to coach the Fusion in 2013 after leading the team through the 2012 campaign. She will team up with Assistant Coach, Christine Voge who is hot off a successful stint as Head Coach of the Queensland 19/U team which finished second at the 2013 National Netball Championships.
  • The 2013 Queensland Fusion boasts three current Firebirds in their ranks; Laura Clemesha, Nicola Gray and Ameliaranne Wells. (NB: Firebirds players are not available this week due to ANZ Championship Finals commitments).
  • The Fusion also have another three former Firebirds; Meegan Bruggemann (nee Rooney), Jacqui Russell and Laura Scherian. Additionally, Stephanie Wood has also previously been a replacement player for the Firebirds.
  • Queensland Fusion athlete, Tiata Baldwin represents Papua New Guinea in international competition.
  • The Fusion has made the semi finals of the ANL in every year except for 2012 and is looking to bounce back from that disappointment in 2013. The highest finish for the Fusion has been third which they have achieved multiple times.
  • There are only seven players returning from the 2012 Queensland Fusion line up. A sign that they are determined to wrestle their way back into the top four.
  • Fusion has played 53 games, won 32, lost 21, drew 0.
