Netball Queensland’s next generation of talent will be on display when the Queensland U17 & U19 State teams fly to Melbourne over the weekend to begin their National Championship campaigns.
Led by coaches Amanda Vanderwal and Christine Voge both teams are well placed to finish in the top three with U19’s coach Vogue looking to steer her team one wave higher than the second place finish in 2013.
“We have had the opportunity to build with this group of players for a couple of years now and there are a number of girls in the team from 2013 when we finished runners up, so we are looking go one better this year,” Voge said.
Both teams leave for Melbourne on Saturday to prepare for the week-long competition, which starts on Monday, and Vogue said her team is more than ready to take on the big guns of Victoria and last year’s champions South Australia.
“The girls have been training really well since we commenced as a team in December and I have been really pleased with how much the group has improved as a team,” Voge said.
“Victoria will be a strong team taking out the U17 Nationals last year and also South Australia which beat us in the final in 2013 so we want to get on top of them this year.”
“You can’t really take any games at nationals lightly especially playing two games in a day, which can take its toll and become challenging,” she said.
Vogue who has been at the helm for three year is calling on the experience of her Captain and defender Hulita Haukinima, along with Dominique Scott and Kristen Oxenford, all of whom have a year of experience under their belts in the U19 age group, to lead the younger members of the team.
“I have trust in the group that we have a lot of strengths across the court and have the ability to play a number of different combinations,” Voge said.
“Coming in to nationals the girls need to perform in each of their positions and this will be a challenge for the week.”
“We are looking for our young shooter Cara Koenen and Ruby Paton, who played in the U17 Queensland State team from last year, to both step up to the next level which will be really important for our chances,” Vogue said.
