Netball Queensland has been shortlisted for seven 2017 QSport Awards after a bumper year of success at grassroots and elite levels of the sport.
The Queensland Firebirds are finalists for Queensland Sport Team of the Year and the ANZ Championship Grand Final, which was won by Queensland in a historic double extra time thriller, is up for Queensland Sport Event of the Year.
Firebirds captaincy duo Laura Geitz and Clare McMeniman are each finalists for Queensland Sport Star of the Year, while Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke is a finalist for Queensland Sport Coach of the Year.
Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark is a finalist for Queensland Sport Administrator of the Year and a nod for Downey Park Netball Association President Elizabeth White OAM for Queensland Sport Volunteer of the Year rounds out the nominations.
Clark said she was thrilled so many stakeholders within the sport had been recognised for their efforts.
“This year was unprecedented in regards to the level of success netball experienced on and off court,” Clark said.
“The Queensland Firebirds cemented themselves as the most successful team in ANZ Championship history, setting a record for crowd attendance at the grand final and cementing the legendary status of coach Roselee Jencke and homegrown stars Clare McMeniman and Laura Geitz.
“The determination demonstrated by the Firebirds was also emulated off the court in the grassroots, with Elizabeth White’s tireless volunteer work a shining example of the lengths our community are willing to go to grow the sport.”
The QSport Awards presentation will be held on Thursday 8 December at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Clark said she looked forward to the event and was hopeful of toasting some netball winners on the night.
“I want to congratulate all of this year’s finalists on their achievements. Each of the nominees are strong and would be worthy winners,” she said.
“Personally, I am honoured to be acknowledged and wish to thank everyone within Netball Queensland that has helped us achieve so much on the court and out in the community this year.
“We look forward to a great night celebrating Queensland sport and the achievements of netball.”
