Mission Queensland State Netball League (MQSNL) team the Rockhampton Leagues Club Capricorn Claws had a record crowd at their first home game of the 2014 season so much so it caused a traffic jam over the local Rockhampton Bridge.
Claws Manager, Katrina Whitham said there is great support for all sport in Rockhampton but especially netball, which has seen an increase in numbers this season.
“With seven minutes to go until the centre pass I looked out the window and there was a big stretch of traffic out across the bridge to the Uni, so we had to hurry and open another door,” Whitham said.
“I knew there was always a big support base in Rockhampton, we have started promoting games on our new Facebook page and we have 430 likes already and we have good support from local media.”
The Claws play out of Central Queensland University with the grandstand holding a capacity of 998 spectators Whitham said the stand was over three quarters full so she predicted 600-700 fans converged to cheer on their local netball team as they took on the Whitsunday Sharks.
“There was the races on, netball in the afternoon and basketball at night so was great to get such a large crowd on a big Saturday for sport up in Rocky,” Whitham said.
The Claws nest home game is Saturday July 5 and both Whitham and the club hope to see an even bigger crowd as they hit the court in a rematch against the Whitsunday Sharks.
“Next game I am hoping to have the grandstand full.” Whitham said.
