The Kedron Wavell Services Club Cougars are one match away from Grand Final glory after winning the Major Semi Final in the Queensland Champions Cup (QCC) against the Carina Leagues Club Tigers, 60:51, on Saturday, 29 June at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre.
In one of the biggest matches of the season, the Cougars brought their A-game as they battled the Tigers to cement their place in the Final. It was an intense first quarter filled with aggression and intensity after the Cougars scored five points within the first few minutes of play. The second quarter was a nail-biter with the Tigers kicking into gear and making the Cougars work for every point. However, it was in the third quarter that the Cougars began to solidify their win by pulling ahead and gaining a crucial nine-point lead. The final quarter of the high stakes match was laced with timely intercepts and fluid teamwork as the Cougars consistency and skill paid off and earned them a much deserved win.
Both teams showed off their expert skills and teamwork throughout the game proving why they are placed top of the ladder. Cougars Captain Kate Bullen said the win against the defending Premiers has put them in a good place.
“It’s so nice to be in the Grand Final but to cement a solid win like that, we are feeling pretty confident. Every time we play them it’s a really good game but it’s great to get a win when it counts.”
After winning the Major Semi Final the Cougars get the week off before the big match in two weeks. Bullen said training would continue as usual with the team remaining focused for the high stakes game.
“We’ll just train as per usual. We won’t change anything, just continue and eyes on the prize.”
The 2013 QCC Grand Final will be held at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, 13 July at 8pm.
In the Mission Queensland State Netball League (MQSNL), the Kedron Wavell Services Club Cougars have also won their Major Semi Final defeating the Brisbane West Lions 65:48 on Saturday, 29 June at the Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre.
With two very strong teams fighting for a place in the Grand Final, it made for a high intensity game with both teams fighting for supremacy. Both teams came to win, however, by the end of the third quarter the Cougars where just ahead with a six-point lead. After four quarters of high energy and strong defence it came down to the Cougars’ determination, teamwork and consistency that earned them the coveted spot and put them straight into the Grand Final.
Cougars Captain Hayley Gordon said the tough game was good preparation for what to expect in the final match of the season.
“It was a tough match and was once again another learning curve for us. From now on in, we can’t just rely on our ability to build those points like we have been during the season. There are a lot of points that we can take from that game, we’ve been working a lot on defence and our attacking under pressure.”
Player of the match went to Goal Shooter Claudia Jones whose accuracy and skill in her position led the Cougars to victory.
“Her shooting is amazing. It’s incredible what she can actually slot in. It’s always a nice feeling to get it in there and know that she’s just going to finish off,” said Gordon.
After a massive win this week, the Cougars will get a much-needed break before the big game.
“It’s always nice to have a bit of a break, especially because we’re carrying a few injuries. Hopefully another week off will give us time to recover so when it comes to the Grand Final we can kick it all in,” she said.
The 2013 MQSNL Grand Final will be held at the Logan Metro Sports Centre on Saturday, 13 July at 6pm.
