Firebirds in action for round 2 of MQSNL

The Mission Queensland State Netball (MQSNL) league kicked off on Saturday with all teams hitting the court for an action packed afternoon of netball at the Hibiscus Sports Complex at Mt Gravatt.

Golden South Jaguars faced defending champions the Carina League Club Tigers first up and Coach Linda Peterson said is was a solid first game for her newly formed team.

“As a new team that has spent very little time together we are looking to improve our connections in attack,” Peterson said.

Jaguars went down to the Tigers 45-58 but Peterson said she knew it would be a tough ask but her team kept their composure and delivered a 60 minute effort that she asked of them.

“We got a feel for the intensity and physicality of the competition and made improvements throughout the match, especially in the second half,” Peterson said.

“It was a full team effort but special mention to our mid court debutants Kari Arrow and Bryah Gafa who both took a step up to division one in their stride and played very well.”

In other matches the Suncoast Lynx had a convincing 46-17 win over the Magnetic North Steelcats and Brisbane North Cougars kicked of the season with a well-rounded performance defeating Brisbane West Lions 57-43.

The players will back up quickly with four teams back in action tomorrow night, Tuesday May 12 for round two of MQSNL at the Hibiscus Sports Complex, Klumpp Road Mt Gravatt.

The Mission Queensland Firebirds have released an additional player, star wing attack Verity Simmons will hit the court for Brisbane South Wildcats, her first full game of netball in 10 weeks after suffering a broken wrist back in round 2 of the Firebirds season.

“I can wait to hit the court tomorrow night for the Wildcats and get a netball in my hands for an entire game and really test out my wrist,” Simmons said.

“I have not played, other than match play at training for almost 10 weeks now, so it will be great to have a game under my belt heading into the Firebirds big match against the Adelaide Thunderbirds this weekend.”

Two other Firebirds players will again be in action tomorrow night, Laura Clemesha hitting the court for Suncoast Lynx against Brisbane North Cougars and Beryl Friday who will be up against her teammate, Simmons when the Carina Leagues Club Tigers take on the Wildcats.
