The Kedron-Wavell Services Club Cougars have taken out the 2013 Mission Queensland State Netball League (MQSNL) Grand Final winning 69:57 against the Brisbane West Lions at Logan Metro Sports Centre on Saturday, July 13.
With a high energy crowd cheering them on, the first quarter of the high stakes game saw both teams neck and neck with only a few points separating them as each fought to take the lead. The Lions worked the court hard showing off their strong defence and quick attack, proving why they are one of the top teams in the league.
By the end of half time it was the defending premiers who were in front by four points due to the flawless teamwork of Cougars’ Wing Attack Hayley Gordon, Center Mahalia Cassidy and Goal Attack Bianca Cattelini who fed the ball to expert Goal Shooter Claudia Jones.
Energy levels were running high in the third quarter of the match with the Lions showing off their lighting fast intercepts and strong teamwork between Wing Defence Peta Coles, Wing Attack Brooke Pollock and Goal Shooter Abigail Meafou. Halfway through the quarter Centre Amy Morssinkhof suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Stevie Lingman.
By the end of the third quarter the Cougars fired ahead with a massive 12-point lead due to their strong endurance and hard working mid section. The fourth quarter saw the Lions fight back with newfound passion. But it was the Cougars who secured Grand Final glory cementing themselves as the undefeated champions of the 2013 season.
Cougars Captain Hayley Gordon was ecstatic with the win, having nothing but praise for her team mates and the Lions.
“The girls worked their butts off for the entire season and to come out undefeated is pretty awesome. It was pretty much goal for goal and in the end we just had to stand up and make the opportunities for ourselves which we did. We knew they were going to run with us, it was a really tough match.”
Player of the Grand Final went to Cougars Goal Shooter Claudia Jones for being a consistent and accurate shooter the entire season.
Brisbane West Lions Coach Shaye Gillett said it was an amazing result to make it into the Grand Final.
“We’ve never made a Grand Final so this is the first time. I’ve got a very young team out there playing and it’s their first year so it’s amazing,” she said.
