Elite Development Squad 2020

Netball Queensland today announced the 17 players selected for the Elite Development Program for 2019/20. Netball Queensland are seeking to align the selection time frames for all its elite squads and as such, this program will run through to October 2020.  Players can be added to the squad during the year and those players selected in the Australian 17U or 19U squad at the National Championships in April 2020, will be added to the squad automatically.

The players selected for this program include 10 players from either the Netball Australia Talls Squad, or the Australian 17U and 19U Squads from the 2019 National Netball Championships.  Seven additional players have been included who selectors identify as being the most likely to secure Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) contracts in the future.

The program has an individual development focus with each player receiving coaching and sports science support targeting their specific requirements and is designed to supplement and compliment that development work that occurs in the State underage program, Qld Fusion and Sapphire Series programs.

In congratulating the athletes, General Manager – High Performance and Sport Entertainment, Richard McInnes states “This year, there was a change in the selection process with a group of players invited to apply for a position. We were very keen to ensure that the players who were ultimately selected were 100% committed to being the best they can be.  We also look at our positional depth charts and there are a few players who are desperately unlucky to miss out this time, but we simply have great depth in their area of court.  The panel were impressed with all applications and the calibre of athlete selected, and we see these players having the potential to break into SSN level over the next 2-5 years.”

With the program, in its current format now moving into its 4th year, a number of players from the initial intake in 2016 now graduate out of the Squad.  These players will remain in contention for selection as SSN Training Partners and for the 2020 Queensland Fusion team.”

Players who have moved through to a Firebirds contract in the last 3 years from EDP include: Tippah Dwan, Tara Hinchliffe, Jemma MiMi and Kim Jenner, while Cara Koenan, Madeline McAuliffe and Sarahpheinna Woulf also received SSN contracts. A number of others including Macy Gardner, Maddie Hinchliffe and Bridey Condren have earned call ups to the Firebirds as temporary replacement players in the SSN competition.  Lenora Misa has been selected again after her successful Netball World Cup campaign for Samoa, and her strong performances for QUT Wildcats in the HART Sapphire Series.
