Athletes added to Queensland Fusion training squad

Queensland Fusion Coach Jenny Brazel has announced three new players to be added to the training squad for the team’s 2015 Australian Netball League campaign.

Zofia Wasiak (Brisbane West Lions), Alanah Cassidy (Brisbane West Lions) and Liana Kaio (Golden South Jaguars) were added after Netball Queensland held a Mission Queensland State Netball League preseason shootout to provide opportunities for State League teams to get some preseason match play and to take a look at the talent on offer in Queensland.

New Head Coach Jenny Brazel said the preseason competition was a chance for selectors including Firebirds Coach Roselee Jencke and Elite Development Coach Kylee Byrne to take a look at the athletes in their team environment and during match play.

“There was some great talent and experience on show at the preseason shootout and it was a great way for the athletes to have an opportunity to show us what they had to offer,” Brazel said.

“It is also a chance for us to see if there is anyone else out there vying for a spot in the squad and Zofia, Alanah and Liana did just that.”

“The depth of talent coming through the ranks in Netball in Queensland is impressive especially on the back of the 17/U team winning the National Netball Championships and it was great to see so many of those under age girls out on court.” Brazel said.

Brazel announced a 24 athlete training squad last month with two players, Jacinta Messer and Claire Haigh withdrawing due to other commitments while Lenora Misa has come out of the squad due to injury.

Following from their most successful Australian Netball League campaign since the competitions inception, the Queensland Fusion will be looking to take it a step further than their heartbreaking second placing from 2014 when they take on the best teams across Australia come July in the underpinning competition to the ANZ Championship.

The squad sees a dynamic mixture of experienced and young talent with an eye to both short and long-term success at the highest level of competition.

The squad has been put through their paces at trainings and opportunity remains for athletes to force their way in with the Selectors set to further view the first two rounds of the 2015 MQSNL season.

The final 15 athletes that will represent Queensland in the 2015 Australian Netball League will be announced on May 13.

The Queensland Fusion will play their first games of the 2015 Australian Netball League campaign in their home round at Ormiston College on July 24, 25 and 26.
