To engage local schools and generate spectators at the 21/U Netball Nationals, Netball Queensland is providing school students the opportunity to participate in a 40-minute netball clinic with appearances from current Mission Queensland Firebirds, followed by entry in to watch a 21/U National Championship game.
Gabi Simpson, Caitlyn Nevins and local Netball Queensland Community School Coaches, Roxanne Osborne, will be delivering these clinics for primary and high school students on Wednesday 11 March at the Caloundra District Netball Association courts, North Street, Caloundra.
Recently appointed Netball Queensland Schools Officer and Firebird defender Bec Bulley said the clinic is a great opportunity for young players to not only see some of the best up and coming players in action but to also learn new skills from our elite netballers.
“It is a chance to see some of the future stars playing in the underage nationals and to also learn new skills from some of the Firebirds players who have come through the junior development pathways,” Bulley said.
“Plus what better way to spend a day than watching and learning about netball before hitting the beach on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.”
Each year, Australia’s best young netball talent has the opportunity to represent their respective state or territory at the National Netball Championships.
Since the first 21/U tournament was played in 1958, many players have since gone on to carve out illustrious careers not only in the ANZ Championship but also on the international stage.
Current Firebirds Captain Laura Geitz led the 21U team in 2006, Clare McMeniman and Laura Clemesha have also captained past Queensland teams with new recruit Beryl Friday leading the charge next week.
Two clinics have been put on to cater specifically for school netballers on the Sunshine Coast and will be held during school hours with an extra clinic being held for all aspiring netballers.
Young local netballers aged 11-17 will also have the opportunity to attend a free clinic with Simpson and Nevins on Wednesday 11 March from 3.45-4.30pm and then cheer on Queensland when they take on New South Wales at 4.40pm.
