The 2015 Netball Queensland phase two squads have been announced following an intensive weekend of trials and a Regional Academy camp conducted by netball legend Jill McIntosh and Mission Queensland Firebirds head coach Roselee Jencke.
The initial selection weekend for the 2015 Queensland Underage (State) Program was the start of the journey towards Queensland success at the 2015 National 17U, 19U and 21U Netball Championships.
It also represented the completion of the journey for athletes within the 2014 Netball Queensland Regional Academy Program.
58 girls from across the state, were talent identified to attend an Academy camp on the Friday and were treated to some high level coaching by two of the very best in the sport in McIntosh and Jencke.
Jill McIntosh, a former Australian player and Diamonds coach said the level of talent on display was impressive.
“Attitude is so important in sport, and in particular teamwork, and the attitude of the 58 participants gathered for the Regional Academy camp here is great!” said McIntosh.
“The girls are representatives selected from across Queensland, they are eager to learn and willing to gain in their skills which will then provide diversity in their position.”
Those athletes then joined another 105 of Queensland’s emerging talent as they vied for selection in the Netball Queensland phase 2 program as part of selections for the 2015 Queensland 17U, 19U and 21U teams.
High Performance Manager Adam Abbott said it was terrific to see so many talented athletes in attendance from across the State.
“Seeing the passion these players have for representing Queensland and putting their all into the weekend to try and progress to the next stage of selections is fantastic” he said.
“The level of talent on display this weekend shows how strong the talent pool is in Queensland.”
“Whilst some of the athletes here will be unlucky to miss out on further selection we are hopeful that the exposure and education they have had over this weekend will encourage them to come back bigger and stronger next year ” Abbott said.
Following the initial selection weekend Netball Queensland have named a total of 90 athletes across the three age groups to continue in the selection process.
They will participate in the Phase 2 Program which will include developmental training sessions in the lead up to the final selection weekend on 13-14 December, at which time the 90 will be cut to 36 and the final 12 to represent Queensland in each age group will be named.
