Opening ANL weekend gives mixed results for Fusion

The Queensland Fusion opened its 2014 Australian Netball League (ANL) campaign in Tasmania on the weekend coming home with one win and one loss after narrowly going down to the Southern Force 48-50 in a thrilling match.

The Fusion let the 2012 premiers race out to an 11-8 lead at quarter-time, but the Queenslanders battled hard to bridge the margin over the next three quarters without success, in the evenly contested match.

To the team’s credit it bounced back on Sunday morning to hand the Canberra Darters its second loss of the weekend, claiming a convincing 67-41 victory.

After going down to the Force in the opening game, the Fusion regrouped and came out firing, outscoring Canberra 41-16 at half-time to put the result beyond doubt by half-time and claim the team’s first win of the season.

Coach Kylee Byrne said while it was not the result she wanted from the first weekend of matches she now knows her team’s strengths and weaknesses.

“It was not the result we wanted, our goal was two from two wins,” Byrne said.

The Fusion will now have two weeks away from competition with byes in rounds two and three before a big weekend at home playing at Ormiston College, with a triple header against the NSW Waratahs, Western Sting and Territory Storm.

Byrne said the team will be working hard at training.

“With such a limited preparation as a squad, the matches have now given us an idea of where we’re at and what needs to be done to get the next wins in front of our home crowd,” Byrne said.

“The standouts from the weekend were Stephanie Wood, Demelza Fellowes and Laura Scherian, who all performed across both matches,” she said.

“It was also great to see what Queensland Under 19 player, Cara Koenan could do on the ANL court and she passed with flying colours, she had a fantastic game against the ACT Darters shooting 36 goals at 92%.
