Netball Queenslands future is in good hands with 86 talent identified athletes from across Queensland ready to take part in the Phase 2 training camp as part of the 2014 Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 State team selection process.
All three squads will undertake a comprehensive program at the Phase 2 Camp on November 2-3 in readiness for the final selections to be held on the weekend of November 30 and December 1 before the full 12 member Queensland teams will be named.
There is an even greater regional presence at the camp this year with seven girls representing North Queensland, including 21-year-old Stephanie O’Brien from the Darling Downs where Mission Queensland Firebird Laura Geitz grew up.
The talented wing attack, whose goal is to one day play for the Firebirds, is looking forward to the camp.
“It is always challenging but it will be good to get back to it, especially in the last month after the off-season,” O’Brien said.
“There is a lot of support coming from my small country town.
“Laura Geitz is definitely my favourite player, she is the most inspiring and coming from the same place it is amazing to see where she has gone and what she has achieved,” O’Brien said.
Under 17 squad members Anna Staib, Chloe Cooper, Georgia Bulley, Kimberley Jenner, Under 19’s Ally McLeod and Katie Gould all from Townsville and U17 representative Michaela Kadleck from Cairns will also fight it out for thechance to show off their skills at the final selection weekend.
Netball Queensland High Performance Officer Courtney Porter said it will be a difficult decision for selectors.
“The talent observed across all trials was exceptional, especially the emerging talent of the younger age groups,” Porter said.
“It is exciting to see North Queensland producing more athletes this year particularly in the Under 17 squad.”
“All three squads will be put through their paces with a focus on athlete education and development and exposure to high performance specialist coaches.
At the conclusion of the Final Selection Weekend, the 2014 Under 17 State Team, Under 19 and Under 21 State Teams will be announced.
The Under 21 National Netball Championships will be held in South Australia from March 11-16, 2014 with the Under 17 and Under 19 National Netball Championships in Victoria from April 6-11, 2014.
