State Underage Team Announcement

Following the final selection camp over the weekend, Netball Queensland is pleased to announce the 17U and 19U Teams to represent Queensland at the National Netball Championships to be held at the Queensland State Netball Centre from Thursday, April 11 to 16.

The 19U squad members made the most of their playing opportunity against the visiting Central Pulse team to push their case for selection in the team. The 19U squad’s versatility proved to be a great asset for many of the selected players.

19U Head Coach, Simone Nalatu said, “It was great to see so many players step up against the Pulse and achieve some success. Many players have performed really well over the weekend across a number of playing positions, giving us the benefit of being less predictable with our playing lines.”

“It is very special to be playing in our new venue in front of passionate Queensland supporters, family and friends and the players are really looking forward to that”

Sarahpheinna Woulf’s selection is pending a medical clearance and she is working hard to be ready for Nationals, while Hana Barretto and Olivia Djikstra have attained State selection for the first time.

“It is great for all players to see the importance of never giving up and these players have been rewarded for the work they have done in the off season”, said Netball Queensland Performance Pathways Manager, Tracey Fear.

The players selected in the 17U Team have come from a wide spread of 16U teams that competed at the 2018 Nissan State Titles. While the majority of the team is based in South East Queensland, regional players and new 2019 team members, Isabelle Shearer and Ava Black have been selected from Rockhampton and Toowoomba, respectively.

Australian 2018 17U squad members Reilley Batcheldor and Lily Gribble, along with Rylee Burns impressed the selectors throughout January and retained their positions in the team.  Another Australian 17U Squad player, Abigail Houston has also been selected pending medical clearance.

Sisters Lynette and Rianah Childs have also been selected in the 2019 team. Lynette has had an impressive 2018, with her Tigers team winning the first ever 16U State Titles and also receiving the Player of the Final award.  Grace Hughes was selected in last year’s Squad, but had to withdraw due to injury, has now secured a spot in the 2019 team and will compete for the first time at Nationals along with other newcomers; Martina Reekers, Alice Mauga and Brianna Martyn.

Head Coach Lauren Forbes said, “This is a team with an exciting mix of experience and emerging talent coming through, their athleticism, behaviours on and off court and tenacious, never give up attitude these players have demonstrated has been impressive. We have seen such a lot of improvement already and are thrilled to be working with these talented athletes with so much potential.”

Each team also has 4 training partners who will carry on training with the team providing cover across all areas of court in case of any player withdrawals.

“We have no doubt any of the training partners, if called into the team, would make the most of the opportunity to compete at Nationals”, said Fear.
