QUEENSLAND 42 def WESTERN AUSTRALIA 30
By KRIS NEIL
Queensland fought off a first half blitz from Western Australia to come home 12-goal winners in the final group match of the national championships.
Queensland now squares off against South Australia in a semi-final with the winner going on to play in the championship decider on Saturday afternoon.
WA flew out of the blocks to trail by just two goals at half-time as Queensland struggled to counter the high ball coming into Annika Lee-Jones in the circle.
Centre Mahalia Cassidy was sent on to weather the barrage in the second half, where she reclaimed control of centre court for Queensland.
The job wasn’t without its challenges though, as WA midcourters Rebecca Tuckey and Tegan Phillips battled hard keep their side in contention.
Cara Koenan enjoyed improved supply from her teammates in the latter stages, scoring 21 of her 37 goals in the second half.
The win solidifies Koenan as the competition’s leading scorer after the group stage, where she finished with 204 goals.
WA did its best to diminish the impact of Koenan by swinging their own shoote Lee-Jones onto her in the third quarter.
Kimberley Shepherd also did her utmost to keep her side in the contest, scoring an accurate 16 goals on 17 attempts.
Queensland’s won the previous contest against South Australia – in Round 4 – by eight goals.
