Firebirds coaches and Silver Ferns legend to share game day secrets

Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke, assistant coach Jenny Brazel and New Zealand Silver Ferns legend Leigh Gibbs will reveal the secrets of the Firebirds inner-sanctum to a handful of lucky coaching aspirants when Queensland play Sunshine Coast Lightning on Saturday 18 February.

In the first of seven Get in the Know workshops to be held at Firebirds home games in 2017, participants will experience a pre-match breakdown from three time ANZ Championship winning coach Jencke, a post-match analysis with Brazel and a tactical workshop with Ferns champion Gibbs.

Later workshops in 2017 will have a stronger umpiring theme, with senior umpires to break down the game with participants.

“The program gives coaches and umpires a real insight into what goes on and provides an opportunity to talk tactics and gain a better understanding of the game,” Gibbs said.

“Roselee will give her take on the match and take questions from participants right before centre pass. It’s a really valuable opportunity.

“After the game, Jenny will come in to give her take on the outcome, the tactics and take further questions before I run through a workbook and break the game down further. It’s a very consultative process – we want the coaches to share their knowledge and views of the game.”

Gibbs needs no introduction to world netball fans. She was first a Netball World Cup winner with New Zealand in 1979 before captaining the Ferns further to glory at the 1987 tournament.

The call came to take the clipboard as coach for New Zealand between 1993 to 1996 and she returned as an assistant from 2001 to 2007, where she was part of the sides who clinched the 2003 World Cup and 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medal.

“My background in New Zealand netball means I bring something different to the table tactically,” Gibbs said.

“The New Zealand way of looking at the game and the tactics we employ differs somewhat from the Australian approach. It provides plenty of food for thought for participants.”
