Introducing Netball Queensland’s partnership with National Science Week

Netball Queensland has welcomed Queensland’s National Science Week Committee as Round 12 sponsors of the Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds to celebrate National Science Week, 10 – 18 August.

Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark also congratulated three Firebirds on being named Queensland ambassadors for National Science Week.

“Laura Clemesha, Jemma Mi Mi and Mahalia Cassidy are passionate about inspiring girls to study STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – so they are ready to take on the jobs of the future,” Ms Clark said.

“As well as being outstanding athletes, Laura, Jemma and Mahalia are either studying STEM-based courses or are working in a STEM field, so they are well placed to be role models and ambassadors,” she said.

Queensland National Science Committee Chair Helen Thompson said the Firebirds sponsorship was designed raise awareness of the broad range of science-based careers on offer and help spark interest in science-based activities for girls and young women.

“No matter where you live, you should be able to find a science fair, environmental lecture or coding and robotics workshop near you by visiting the National Science Week website,” Ms Thompson said.

“If you can’t find an activity, get together with your local school or university and host an event for your community.

“Scientists love to share information about their research and career with people of all ages from students to teachers, parents and grandparents.”
