The Finals Series in Netball Queensland’s top tier of competition, the Samsung State League is drawing to a close with a country-city clash tomorrow to determine the last vacant Grand Final spot over two divisions.
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Claws will take on the Brisbane West Lions, which won the title in 2014, in the preliminary final Division Two.
It’s the second year in a row the Rockhampton outfit has made it to this stage of the competition and the Claws are hoping to go one better and secure a Grand Final berth.
“Rockhampton finished ahead of the Lions on the ladder coming into the Finals Series, so there is an expectation that they have a great chance of making it all the way to the end,” Netball Queensland General Manager High Performance, Richard McInnes said.
“But it’s finals and you never know,” he said.
“The calibre of the teams and the talent of the players continues to grow every year so it’s never a sure thing when we get to this stage of the competition.”
The winner of the Claws/Lions match will meet the North Brisbane Cougars in the Grand Final hoping to halt the all-Cougar attack on the State League silverware.
The Cougars have engraved their name on the Division One trophy ten times since 2001 and will play the Carina Leagues Club Tigers in the Grand Final on Tuesday 26 April at Hibiscus Gardens.
“At both the Div One and Two levels, this is Netball Queensland’s premier competition, so the impending culmination of 12 weeks of incredible, tightly-contested and high quality netball is exciting,” McInnes said.
“We have seen 18 teams from across Queensland compete to be the best in the state and it’s rewarding to see that the regional areas of the state are represented in the Finals Series through the Rockhampton Claws.
“It’s going to be a great week of netball.”
