The Kedron Wavell Services Club Cougars have taken out the 2013 Queensland Champions Cup (QCC) Grand Final winning 66:53 against rivals the Carina League Club Tigers at Logan Metro Sports Centre on Saturday, July 13.
The two top teams, who were contenders in last years’ Grand Final decider, brought their A-game making it a high intensity match that had the roaring crowd on the edge of their seats.
In the first quarter both teams were evenly matched as their accurate shooting, strong mid sections and aggressive defence kept them only points apart. The first injury time of the match was called for Cougars Goal Attack Rebecca Chapman who suffered a minor back injury, but continued to play.
The start of the second quarter saw the Tigers lead by four points forcing the Cougars to re-evaluate their strategy and work to make up ground.
Utilising their strong teamwork skills, Cougars’ Center Sally Butters, Wing Defence Bronte Orreal, Goal Defence Kate Bullen, Goal Shooter Tiata Baldwin and Goal Attack Rebecca Chapman made a roaring comeback to finish with a five-point lead by half time.
The third quarter saw defending premiers, the Tigers, show off their strong defence as they worked to close the five -point margin. Wing Defence Jemma Mi Mi, Wing Attack Katie Walker and Center Jacqui Russell worked hard to feed the ball to Goal Shooter Beryl Friday and Goal Attack Sophie Croft.
However, the Cougar showed unbeatable strength and fluid teamwork as they kept powering through to attain a 10-point lead by the end of the quarter. In the final and closest quarter of the match both teams exhibited incredible netball skills and technique as they further proved why they are the top teams in the competition.
A second injury time was called again for Cougars Goal Attack Rebecca Chapman who continued to play to remainder of the match. In the final 10 minutes, the Cougars had a strong lead but the Tigers didn’t go down without a fight, continuing to make the game a nail-biter till the final whistle.
In the final minutes of the game it was clear the Kedron Wavell Services Club Cougars had victory in their sights and after an incredible shot from Goal Shooter Tiata Baldwin in the last five seconds of play, their fate as the Grand Final winners of the 2013 Queensland Champions Cup was sealed.
Cougars Captain Kate Bullen said the hard work this season was made worthwhile by the win.
“We had some pretty shocking games in the middle and we reassessed what we were doing, what we wanted and why we are here. We went back to basic netball from there and we just kept building,” she said.
Cougars Wing Attack Chanel Dryer was awarded the 2013 QCC Grand Final Player of the Match, but Bullen praised the entire team for their efforts throughout the season.
“I don’t think it’s about who played best, everyone was great. Playing in this team, and as a team, is the most important thing and that’s what we’re all about in the Cougars,” said Bullen.
Carina Leagues Club Tigers Coach Amanda Stagg said despite the disappointment the Cougars secured a well-deserved win.
“When you come against Cougars it’s always a tough battle so you have to bring you’re A-game and they definitely did that today so all credit to them,” she said. “It was a disappointing loss, the Cougars came out and they did a really good job. It was their night tonight and I do nothing but congratulate them.”
When reflecting on the past season, Stagg said she was nothing but proud of her team. “You couldn’t get a better group of girls whot have worked so hard. It’s disappointing but we’ve had a great season.”
