Seven teams played throughout the year in Division One of the Mission Queensland State Netball League, but only two teams—Brisbane North Cougars and Carina Leagues Club Tigers—can play off in the grand final.
Both times these teams came up against each other in the rounds, it was the Tigers that came away with the win; but when the semi-final came around the Cougars secured their grand final spot straight away, beating the Tigers 49 to 42.
The strength and ability of both teams meant this game would be a close one, and they didn’t disappoint.
The game started off with 2016 Queensland Firebirds player and Centre for the Cougars, Mahalia Cassidy, turning over the very first centre pass, allowing her team to secure an early lead, scoring the first three goals of the match.
The Tigers quickly caught up, bringing the game to 5 all before gaining a two goal lead halfway through the first quarter.
The Cougars fought back, and the first quarter ended with the teams drawn at nine a piece.
The second quarter was goal for goal for the first ten minutes, with the Cougars securing a three goal lead with under five minutes to go.
By the end of the first half, the Cougars had extended that to six goals, leading 22 to 16.
The third quarter saw a shooting change up for the Tigers, with the Sophie Croft, the Goal Attack, and Alexia Baker, the Goal Shooter, swapping over.
Cougars came out strong in the second half, scoring the first three goals again.
Sophie Croft, Goal Shooter for the Tigers, called an injury time out for her ankle that was shortly followed with another from Cougars Centre, Mahalia Cassidy, with a calf muscle injury.
The Tigers brought it back one goal, with the Cougars leading after the third quarter 32 goals to 27.
The final quarter was a tough one, with both teams pushing to win the match, but it was the Cougars who won the game by five goals.
The final score was 45 to 40.
Cougars Goal Shooter, Tiata Baldwin, received Player of the Match.
