This is the highest level of State competition in Queensland. The event is a highlight on the Netball Queensland calendar. Entry will be $5 for adults, $3 concession and children under 12 free. The Kedron Wavell Services Club Cougars have dominated both competitions throughout the season. On Saturday night, they play theBrisbane West Lions in the MQSNL Grand Final at 6pm and the Carina Leagues Club Tigers in the QCC Grand Final at 8pm.
This is the fifth time that the Cougars have met the Tigers in the QCC Grand Final. This season, the Tigers defeated the Cougars in Rounds 2 (52:47) and 8 (50:48) of the competition, but were beaten in the Major Semi Final 60:51. The Cougars claimed the premiership in 2011, 2010, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002. The Tigers claimed the premiership in 2012, 2009 and 2008.
In the MQSNL, the Cougars have won six out of eight Finals since the inception of the State Netball League, while the Brisbane West Lions have never competed in a Grand Final. They made it to the Minor Semi Final in 2008, but were defeated by the Wildcats. In their last encounter in Round 1 of the season, the Cougars defeated the Lions 51:44.
The calibre of players in this year’s competitions has been incredibly high. Last night’s QCC Semi Final included four former Firebirds and five former AIS athletes on the court: Katie Walkie (Firebird), Sophie Croft (Firebird / AIS), Jacqui Russell (Firebird / AIS), Laura Scherian (Firebird / AIS), Rachel Forbes (AIS) and Stephanie Wood (AIS).
Good luck to all the teams on Saturday night. Play hard, play fair and play to win!
