THE Whitsunday Sharks begin their hunt for a first ever Mission Queensland State Netball League crown when their 2013 season starts on Saturday, March 9 at the State Netball Centre in Mt. Gravatt, Brisbane.
More than 60 people attended Saturday night’s team launch at the new Virgin Australia Stadium in Mackay including Mission Queensland Firebirds defender Demelza McCloud
The gala evening saw the announcement of Sally Jones as this year’s captain with Jemma Carey, Ashleigh Taylor and Kelly Beckingham named in the leadership group.
Whitsunday Region President Bette Wyer said this season’s team features an all-local line-up.
“This is the first time in three years all players and coaching staff are based in the region,” she said.
“Previously, we’ve recruited a Brisbane coach and a couple of Brisbane players but not in 2013.”
After finishing at the lower end of the ladder in 2012, the team has been working hard in the pre-season under the watchful eye of new coach Dave Benson and fitness trainer Joe Fatnowna.
“We’re playing the Carina Leagues Club Tigers first up followed by the Brisbane West Lions in Beenleigh on the Sunday but the team’s looking really good and are just keen to get on the court now,” Ms Wyer said.
“I think we’re definitely a chance to make the finals and from there who knows what can happen.”
With Mission Queensland Firebird Demelza McCloud now in their corner, Ms Wyer believes anything is possible.
“She is just awesome that girl, she’s just top value and everyone was so impressed by her,” said Ms Wyer.
“Demelza gave the girls some really good advice and ran a junior clinic on Saturday before working with the Sharks on Sunday.
“I’m hoping she might become a regular visitor to the area.”
The 2013 Mission Queensland State League beings on Saturday, March 2 at the State Netball Centre with all three matches starting at 5pm.
