The Brisbane West Lions netball teams performed well on the weekend in the Queensland Champions Cup (QCC) and Mission Queensland State Netball League (MQSNL) competitions.
Despite the Brisbane West Lions QCC team losing to the Kedron Wavell SC Cougars on Saturday night 58:39, their coach Linda Peterson said the game was a positive experience for the team.
“It was a really strong, hard and fast first quarter. We were right in it after that,” said Peterson.
The team dropped back during the second and third quarters, but played a solid last quarter to finish strong.
“It was an improvement on our last performance and that’s what we’re looking to do each week,” she said.
As the end of the QCC competition draws closer, Peterson said the team would be aiming to go one better in each subsequent game.
The Brisbane West Lions MQSNL team won both of their games at Toowoomba’s University of Southern Queensland.
The team defeated the Wide Bay Thundercats 61:27 on Saturday night, and the Darling Downs Panthers 60:27 on Sunday afternoon.
Coach Shaye Gillett said the team backed up well between the first and second game, buoyed by the positive result.
“They played really well. They focused on themselves, which is really important leading into the last couple of rounds, and they focused on their own jobs,” said Gillett.
Peta Coles played an especially impressive game.
“It was the best game she’s played all season, she was excellent,” said Gillett.
Both the QCC and MQSNL teams will play their next games against the Logan Wildcats at the State Netball Centre. The QCC team will play on June 8, and the MQSNL team on June 15.
