Rocky Claws at the Top

It’s been one hell of a season for the Rockhampton Leagues Club Capricorn Claws so far in Division Two Country of the 2016 Samsung Queensland State Netball League.

At this stage, the Claws have won all but one of their games, securing their spot on the top of the ladder.

After going down by two goals against the Magnetic North Steelcats in round 10, the Claws are hoping to maintain their spot on top of the ladder going into the finals series.

In order for that to happen, Head Coach Katrina Whitham knows her team still has a few things to work on.

“Right now, I’m focusing on getting the girls to work the channels and playing short and sharp,” Whitham said.

“I also want my girls to be focused for all four quarters, and not just three quarters. We shouldn’t be letting other teams come back in during that last quarter to make it a closer game.”

After having a couple of close games in rounds nine and ten, Captain Shanita Smith thought the large crowd supporting the home team, the Whitsunday Sharks, had a big impact on their performance.

“It’s always tough playing with a big crowd against you,” she said.

“We’re used to having a huge crowd cheering for us at our home games, so it was very off-putting and different for us to play under those circumstances, especially for some of the younger girls who have never experienced that before.”

With the home round this coming weekend, the Claws are hoping their supporters will help them secure a few more wins.

“We can get about 1,000 people to our home games,” Whitham said.

If the Claws finish the season like they started it, they will be a lock for the finals series, but not getting over-confident will remain at the forefront of the team’s mind.

“Going through the season with so many wins is definitely a confidence booster, but we can’t let that confidence go to our heads,” Smith said.

“We need to go out there strong every game and make sure we don’t get complacent.”
