Following QLD Health’s announcement today of a three-day lockdown in Local Government Areas: Townsville, Palm Island, Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Somerset, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Gold Coast, all netball activity will be suspended in the affected local government areas.
Community Netball
The suspension of all netball activity includes training sessions, matches and all other netball-related gatherings, and will take effect from 6pm today, Tuesday 29 June 2021. This suspension will remain in place until the lockdown is lifted, currently scheduled for 6pm on Friday, 2 July. All netball fixtures scheduled for Saturday, 3 July and Sunday, 4 July can proceed as planned at this stage, pending any further updates from the Queensland Government.
Nissan State Age
Due to the lockdown announced today, Netball Queensland has taken the difficult decision to postpone our 2021 Nissan State Age Championship due to start this weekend on the Sunshine Coast. As the largest participation event in Netball Queensland’s calendar, we have been planning and preparing for this event for a very long time. This outbreak and the decision to postpone the event will affect more than 20,000 participants, supporters, staff, volunteers, vendors, commercial partners, and media who attend our State Age event. However, the health and wellbeing of the community must come first. There is significant risk hosting an event of this size when we are heading into a lockdown due to cases in the community and more practically, the snap lockdown means we are not able to prepare and set-up for the event. We appreciate that the lockdown and postponement of State Age will impact on planned travel and accommodation arrangements. Given we are postponing not cancelling the event, we encourage as many teams as possible to seek credits against bookings. We hope to see everyone back together later in the year. Further information around the rescheduling of this event will be provided in the coming weeks.
Holiday Clinics
Our holiday clinics scheduled at Wakerley District Netball Courts on Thursday have been postponed. The Train Like a Firebird clinic on Monday 5 July has also been postponed. Netball Queensland staff will be in touch with participants across the coming couple of days to reschedule you into an alternate clinic or to provide a credit for use at future clinics. Unfortunately, our Queensland Firebirds players will not be permitted to attend clinics in person for the remainder of the Suncorp Super Netball season. The health of our athletes remains paramount to ensure the continuation of the 2021 SSN competition.
Training and netball activity in other parts of the state unaffected by the lockdown may continue, however any participants who have recently been in the affected areas, are required to follow the lockdown restrictions, even if they are currently located outside of the affected regions.
