Selectors have named eight players from the 17U side which was recently crowned Queensland’s Junior Sports Team of the Year following their NNC gold medal in Darwin, in the 19 and Under selection for 2024.
Those chosen include 2023 17U captain Ellie Brice, Australian Youth Commonwealth Games representatives Jada Delaney, Gemma Hutchings and Sasha-May Flegler as well as 2023 17U top scorer Tia Crombie.
Sunshine Coast Thunder, Carina Leagues Club Tigers, Gold Coast Titans, Northern Rays, Brisbane South Wildcats, ACU Brisbane North Cougars and BOND University Bull Sharks are the HART Sapphire Series clubs represented in the 19U selection.
The final 16 also includes nine athletes who attended the AIS following Darwin’s NNC, where they gained recognition in Netball Australia’s categorisation framework and are also part of the Queensland Firebirds Futures Academy.
Meanwhile, Carina Leagues Club Tiger Sarah Joyce and ACU Brisbane North Cougar Tia Molo have both been named in the 17U selection having been a part of this year’s title win in the Northern Territory.
Joining them in the 17U selection is twin sisters Marley and Rio Burns – two of five Cougars in the selection – and Northern Rays trio Charlotte Jonsen, Ciarn MacBride and Shaylah Pershouse.
"This first phase of the selection process has been extremely competitive, a credit to all athletes and their endeavours to compete for a position and do their best,” NQ Head of Pathways Roselee Jencke said.
“It made selection for the final 16 of each squad tough for the selectors.
“The final squads now move into Phase 2 where they will be receiving further specialist coaching and comprehensive strength and conditioning programs for the next eight weeks."
Selectors will name the final 12 athletes plus training partners in February for each squad ahead of next year’s NNC, at a date and venue to be announced.
