Carina Leagues Club Tigers vs Brisbane South Wildcats
After pushing Gold Coast Titans in Round One, the Brisbane South Wildcats indicated they could be the big improvers of 2024 as they defeated the Tigers 63-54 at Nissan Arena on Saturday.
The nine-point win was extra significant for the club after the passing of long-serving operations manager and Wildcats stalwart Annie Jennings following a cancer battle earlier in the week.
Both clubs wore black armbands in recognition of Jennings while there was also a minute's silence observed before the match, as Megan Lynch's team secured an emotional victory.
Defeat leaves the Tigers still searching for their first win of 2024 after the opening-round loss to Sunshine Coast Thunder.
Sunshine Coast Thunder v ACU Brisbane North Cougars
Despite the disappointing midweek confirmation that midcourter Brianna Martyn will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury suffered in Round One, the Thunder have established themselves as the early competition pacesetters following a 56-49 win over the Cougars at Nissan Arena.
Goal shooter Charlie Bell, back in Thunder colours after her short stint as an injury replacement for ANZ Championship team Mainland Tactix in New Zealand, stood tall against her former club while fellow Sunshine Coast Lightning training partner Annie Miller impressed in mid-court.
Youngster Ellie Brice was a standout for the Cougars but the reigning premiers will be eager to bounce back in next weekend's double-header after starting their season with back-to-back defeats.
Gold Coast Titans vs Bond University Bull Sharks
The new-look Bull Sharks got their campaign off to a fantastic start after last weekend's bye, defeating their Gold Coast rivals the Titans by two points at Carrara.
With Sophie Westover and former Firebird Mia Stower using their experience and leadership across the court, the Bull Sharks defeated the Titans 50-48.
Stower and Westover were among five debutants for the Bull Sharks along with Firebirds training partner Sasha-May Flegler, Jayden Molo and Georgia Bodle while young defender Lauren Aubrey impressed on her Sapphire Series debut for the club.
The Titans lead by a single goal at halftime but were unable to hold on in front of a packed crowd, despite centre Kourtnee Baird's impressive showing.
