Georgia Lindsay may not have experienced as many wins as she would have liked so far this season, yet the second-year Brisbane South Wildcats attacker is brimming with positive energy.
An email recently arrived in the 22-year-old Gudjal woman’s inbox announcing her selection in the Queensland Under 23 First Nations train-on squad, while her Wildcats are heading into Round 12 of the HART Premier Netball League Sapphire division buoyed by a first victory of the season last weekend.
It is just reward for Lindsay, who accumulates close to 400km on the road every week, commuting from her Toowoomba home to netball commitments in Brisbane.
“It’s a juggle, and certainly very time-consuming,” she said.
“At the moment I do two training sessions a week, plus the game, for the Wildcats in Brisbane. This weekend just gone, with the double-header, I travelled with Sarah Kitcher, and we stayed at our manager’s house, which was lovely.”
The challenge of back-to-back games at Nissan Arena was all but forgotten with a potentially season-defining six-goal triumph over the Carina Leagues Club Tigers on Sunday.
“It was such a good game, so exciting, and that really encapsulates us as a team,” Lindsay said.
“I think it’s a testament to us that we were in Round 11 and we continued fighting and got our win.”
Injuries forced the Wildcats to recruit from Victoria, with Dakota Newson, Mia Van Wyk and Rahni Samason bolstering a side that nailed the one-point strategy in the dying minutes.
“The girls flew up and brought amazing energy to our group,” Lindsay said.
“They came into our team, treated it like their own, helped us out, and were the ultimate teammates for the weekend. I think that’s probably the best thing, we still used our core team who were available, and they came in as additions to be the cherry on top.”
The Wildcats now face a tough Round 12 clash this Sunday against the ICare Group Australia Ipswich Jets, who sit second on percentage on the HPNL Sapphire Division ladder.
Also scheduled for this weekend at Nissan Arena is a two-day selection camp for the Queensland team competing at the Netball Australia First Nations Tournament in Victoria next month.
Should she be selected, it will be Lindsay’s third consecutive year representing Queensland.
“I’m super excited and keen to be back, probably a little less nervous than I have been previously because of my relationship now with coach Sharon Finnan-White,” Lindsay said.
“It’s one of my favourite teams to play in, and one of the best events on the calendar.”
It is also one step away from Netball Australia’s First Nations Black Swans squad.
“The first year I was a bit ignorant and just happy to be playing for Queensland,” Lindsay said.
“Last year I was pushing for that Black Swans spot but unfortunately didn’t make it. I’ll keep going for it.”
