Vicki Wilson OAM

Hall of Fame - Athlete Member

Inducted in 2024

Having started at just 7-years-old, Vicki Wilson would go on to be widely acknowledged as the best goal shooter in the world when she retired in 1999 after a then-record of 104 appearances for Australia.

Wilson's 15-year international career included four World Cups - winning three titles in 1991, 1995 and 1999 - with her final Australian appearance being as captain in the gold-medal win in the 1999 World Cup decider. Wilson also captained the Australian team to a win in the inaugural netball Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur during 1998.

Representing Queensland in the Under-19's team in 1982, the Open level from 1983-1996 - including captaining the team from 1898 to 1996 - Wilson was the first athlete to play over 150 caps for Queensland open netball teams.

When the Commonwealth Bank Trophy was established in 1997, there was no other choice than Wilson to be the inaugural captain of the first Queensland Firebirds team, leading the side until her retirement in 1999.

Awarded an Order of Australia medal in 1992, Wilson's remarkable netball career was acknowledged by being named as one of the Australian Institute of Sport "Best of the Best" athletes in 2002 as well as being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004, and Australian Netball Hall of Fame in 2008.

Wilson went on to forge a post-playing career as a world class coach, taking over the Queensland Firebirds from 2006 to 2009 and playing a key role in luring players such as Romelda Aiken-George and Laura Geitz to the team, laying the foundation for premiership success in 2011, 2015 and 2016. She has since gone on to coach the New Zealand Silver Ferns and Fiji international teams, and in 2023 was named as a member of World Netball's Coaching Advisory Panel, supporting and implementing the development of quality coaches and coaching worldwide.

Vicki Wilson OAM also holds Life Membership at Netball Queensland.
