The Cougars 18U team completed an undefeated defence of their title, winning all five of their pool games before sweeping past the Carina Leagues Club Tigers in the semi-finals and then comfortably dispatching Bond University Bull Sharks 49-24 in the Grand Final.
Earlier, the Cougars 16U team defeated Carina Leagues Club Tigers 35-24, gaining revenge for a 39-31 loss in the pool matches on Monday – the Cougars 16s only loss in the tournament.
The double title win matches last year’s achievements where the Cougars also claimed a clean sweep of the divisions.
Cougars defender Charlotte Jonsen was named Grand Final MVP in the 18U division while another Cougar, defender Matilda Canning, was the 16U Grand Final MVP.
Over 200 athletes from across the state competed across both grades including Ruby North franchises Mackay Monarchs, Far North Flames, North Queensland United and Capricorn Claws.
Dozens of bench officials and umpires from across Queensland also played a key role to the tournament’s success with regional umpires from Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Gladstone and Toowoomba among those officiating.
Following the titles, a selection of 17U and 19U players have been chosen by Netball Queensland as State Squads to trial throughout the month of November before a final cohort of 16 players is chosen in both age groups in December.
Those squads will then complete the selection process in January where the final team and training partners are chosen for next year’s National Netball Championships.
