Over three action-packed school holiday days, the group stepped into the shoes of a construction company, planning, tendering for and ultimately building a small-scale bridge to deliver the Centre Court Bridge project.
Among the participants was Lillyrose Giles, a Year 10 student at Bremer State High School and a member of Netball Queensland's Diamond Spirit Educate program, who said the whole experience exceeded her expectations.
The team presented their tender and construction case, before getting started on the physical build.
"You learn a lot with this," Lillyrose said.
"You learn how to use tools properly and what to use them for. You learn even more when you're in your tendering sessions too."
By Friday, with the final touches complete, the team celebrated with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of proud family members and Fulton Hogan staff. Queensland Firebirds player Emily Moore was on site across all days cheering the team on.
"I can't believe we got it done in basically a day," Lillyrose reflected.
" I'm very proud that we did this as a team. It was really, really amazing - I recommend people should do this. It was so fun.”
Created by Fulton Hogan in partnership with Constructionarium Australia and Netball Queensland, In Her Boots exists to inspire more young women into civil construction careers, in an industry where women currently make up just 13 per cent of Queensland's workforce.
With Brisbane gearing up for a major construction boom ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games - and Nissan Arena itself part of the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre precinct - partnerships like this one are helping build the diverse workforce our state will need.
Netball Queensland and the Firebirds are proud to stand alongside Fulton Hogan in that mission.
