Gold Coast-based Somerset College has taken home gold, defeating local rival Oxenford State School at the Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup in Bundaberg.
In festival of netball across two sun-soaked days in Bundaberg, it was Somerset who emerged on top after an extra-time thriller in Sunday’s grand final.
Oxenford’s Charlotte Peake won the Olivia Douglas memorial award as grand final MVP while Brisbane’s Coorparoo State School claimed the bronze medal.
The exciting conclusion wrapped up an event which featured 540 athletes from Years 4 to 6 competing.
Charlotte Brown, Kelli Johnson and Georgia Fromuhler were rewarded for their outstanding officiating across the weekend, receiving the Umpires Awards.
The carnival-like atmosphere at the Bundaberg Netball Association courts, which included a Welcome to Country delivered by local First Nations traditional owner Brent McLellan, was complimented with four food vendors and a valour merchandise stand being located at the event.
The Bundaberg Regional Council, who provided $15,000 sponsorship for the event, were also represented with councillors visiting across the weekend.
Netball Queensland acknowledges the great work by the Bundaberg Netball Association in hosting the event, especially President Matt Leighton and Treasurer Karen Hollaway.
Local legend Betty Wallace, 79, also did the association proud, umpiring Bayview Bullets games across the weekend.
Netball Queensland also thanks all the coaches, parents, teachers, spectators, volunteers and staff who helped make this year’s Origin Energy Primary Schools Cup a success.
