Netball Queensland is thrilled to officially announce the 2022 Nissan Junior State Age Championships will be held at the Les Hughes Sporting Complex in Lawnton.
Hosting the popular four-day event, which is for players aged 12-14 representing member associations across the state, is the Pine Rivers Netball Association.
It is anticipated that a cumulative total of more than 30,000 participants and spectators will walk through the gates across the four days.
Netball Queensland General Manager – Commercial, Marketing and Events, Nathan Spooner, said he had no doubt this would be a stellar carnival.
“We are delighted to have locked in such a fantastic venue for this year’s Nissan Junior State Age Championships, which will showcase some of the best young talent Queensland has to offer,” he said.
“It is also extra exciting to be holding the juniors as a standalone event from seniors, which makes it even more special for those participating and allows more people to come and watch.
“A huge thank you to Pine Rivers Netball Association for hosting and to the Moreton Bay Regional Council for its incredible support, because without them these events wouldn’t be possible.”
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor, Peter Flannery, said to secure the junior state age championships was a huge coup for the local netball scene, particularly with moves by the sport to be part of south east Queensland’s Olympics program in 10 years’ time.
“The benefits of an event like this for the players, the club and our local businesses are exactly why council is investing in more sporting facilities as part of a record $743 million budget,” Mayor Flannery said.
“It’s why we’re pushing for major venues and infrastructure to be built right in here in Moreton Bay as part of the Olympics.
“The investment by council in Les Hughes over recent years plus the work of the Pine Rivers Netball Association has cemented the venue’s reputation in Queensland netball as the destination for major events.
“I’m looking forward to welcoming the 30,000 participants and spectators that’ll be taking part this July, many of whom could very well be wearing the green and gold on the netball court come 2032,” Mayor Flannery said.
The partnership between Netball Queensland and Moreton Bay Regional Council is set to be beneficial on and off the court.
“The support of Netball Queensland to host the event here in Moreton Bay will also be a huge coup for the local economy as they recover from COVID-19,” Mayor Flannery said.
“30,000 participants and spectators equals thousands of families buying food at local cafes, filling up at local servos and maybe even considering making the move to our region.”
