The Mareeba Netball Association marked a transformative milestone on Saturday, March 21, with the official opening of its new airhall structure covering four existing hard courts.
This $1.6 million project, funded through the "Play Our Way" program with valuable local support from Bendigo Community Bank Mareeba and Dimbulah, creates crucial all-weather training and playing opportunities for the tropical region.
The community celebrated the achievement with junior coaching sessions throughout the afternoon, followed by a vibrant social competition featuring 19 teams making full use of the covered facility.
Meanwhile, Innisfail Netball Association has welcomed the completion of comprehensive court redevelopment and lighting upgrades, delivered through a $965,000 "Play Our Way" grant. These improvements will extend training capacity and provide enhanced playing conditions for members across all age groups.
These far north developments follow the successful February reopening of Lockyer Valley Netball Association's upgraded facility, where a $750,000 "Play Our Way" grant enabled the resurfacing of four hard courts and conversion of four grass courts to hard surfaces.
Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells said everyone deserves the opportunity to play sport in a safe and welcoming environment.
“The Albanese Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program is the most significant commitment ever to women and girls sporting programs and facilities and it’s making a difference in Far North Queensland,” Minister Wells said.
“Sport is the glue for many regional communities and these investments mean more women and girls can get onto the court and play netball.”
Netball Queensland recognises the Australian Government's continued investment in community sport infrastructure, ensuring regional netball associations have access to quality facilities that support participation, development and community engagement across the state.
