The Netball Queensland Board of Directors is delighted to confirm the appointment of Mitchell Murphy.
Murphy is a purpose-driven and values-based leader, who brings with him a wealth of experience from a governance, media and sporting background.
He has held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Longreach Regional Council since 2019, after spending more than a decade in senior management roles with Fairfax Media.
Murphy holds a Master of Business Administration, is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is currently studying the Public Leadership Credential at the esteemed Harvard Kennedy School.
Chair of Netball Queensland, Ian Fullagar, said the addition of Murphy was an exciting one.
“We are thrilled to have Mitchell join us as his experience, particularly in media and his understanding of regional Queensland, really rounds out our skills-based board,” Fullagar said.
“We felt there was a strong alignment of values and our vision for sport, which is very important.
“Having led elite sports organisations before, Mitchell will also be able to offer some valuable insight into how other codes operate and provide a different perspective.”
Not only is Murphy no stranger to the sporting world, he has been at the helm of clubs during critical times such as the Brisbane Bullets’ iconic return to the NBL.
Murphy, also a former CEO of A League club Newcastle Jets and Football Victoria, said he was ‘both humbled and excited’ to join the board.
“I’m passionate about sport and my key focus will be to work collaboratively with fellow Directors to provide first-rate governance and ensure strategic priorities are achieved,” he said.
“Netball Queensland’s participation rates and the strength of the Firebirds brand provides a foundation to secure commercial and sponsorship support for the sport.
“We are blessed to have an outstanding CEO in Catherine Clark and I look to working closely with her, the talented staff and the dedicated committees and volunteers across the Sunshine State.”
