Netball Queensland shares its heartfelt congratulations after Firebirds legend Laura Geitz was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.
Geitz was announced as an inductee at a QSport Sponsors and Members Function in Brisbane on Tuesday.
The acknowledgement is a fitting reward for Geitz, who captained both the Queensland Firebirds and Australian Diamonds during a stellar playing career.
Having grown up in Allora in the Darling Downs region, Geitz played for the AIS Canberra Darters in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy before returning to Queensland and the Firebirds in 2008.
During Geitz’s time with the Firebirds, the club claimed three championships and she was twice named ANZ Championship Player of the Year (2011, 2014), eventually retiring in 2018 having made 169 national league appearances having made a successful return to the elite level following the birth of her first child.
Geitz made 71 appearances for her country, leading the Diamonds to gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games while also claiming silver in the 2010 and 2018 Games.
She was also part of Australia’s World Championship-winning teams in 2011 and 2015.
The 2011 Liz Ellis Diamond winner’s achievements led to her being immortalised in bronze in a statue created by sculptor Liam Hardy which now stands proudly outside the home of Queensland netball, Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.
“Laura is a true great of netball and an incomparable role model both on and off the court,” Netball Queensland CEO Kate Davies said.
“It is only fitting she join some of our sporting greats in the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame, and on behalf of the broader netball community I wish to pass on our most sincere congratulations to Laura for this honour.”
