Netball Queensland has taken steps to further strengthen its commitment to making netball a safe, inclusive community and sport for all.
In the lead up to the Queensland Firebirds second Pride Match this weekend, Netball Queensland marked the special occasion by renewing its Pride in Sport membership.
To bring awareness to Pride in sport and the LGBTIQ+ community, Netball Queensland and the Queensland Firebirds have also made all their social media assets rainbow coloured this week.
Netball Queensland CEO, Kate Davies, said as a values-driven organisation it was important to live by its values, and one of those values is being inclusive.
“We want netball to be a place where everyone belongs and can be themselves, because there is a place in our sport for everyone exactly as they are,” Davies said.
“This week and every week we will be doing all we can to celebrate and encourage the diversity within our netball community.
“Through our membership with Pride in Sport we are proud to be playing our part in leading the way in ensuring Australia’s sporting culture is inclusive.”
Netball Queensland General Manager – Netball, Glenn Dennis, said it was crucial that organisations did more than just tick boxes.
“Education needs to be a key element to this movement,” he said.
“So, we will continue to work with Pride in Sport to provide education and awareness training to our staff, members, and wider community.
“At Netball Queensland we will be hosting a Lunch and Learn session for all staff on the “Allyship in Sport and Movement Settings” presented by Proud to Play.
“Then from this we will look at many ways we can filter this training down to all Netball Queensland associations and clubs to make sure the education is starting early at grass roots level.”
The Queensland Firebirds hosted the inaugural Pride Match against the Collingwood Magpies at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena during last year’s Suncorp Super Netball season.
This weekend the Firebirds will again take part in the prominent match hosted by Collingwood in Hobart on Sunday.
