Thanks to a grant from both organisations, NQ has already delivered a series of Woolworths NetSetGo clinics across the state’s north with more to come, introducing children aged 5-10 to the ultimate team sport – netball.
Designed to implement Woolworths NetSetGo clinics in under-serviced communities across the state’s far north, the program is aiming to foster participation, skill development, and connection to the sport for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.
Visits have already taken place in Cooktown, Hopevale, Wujal Wujal, Bamaga, Horn Island, and Thursday Island, with upcoming visits planned for Weipa, Napranum, Old Mapoon and Aurukun later week, and further trips to Coen and Lockhart River in June dependent on weather.
The program is not only delivering Woolworths NetSetGO clinics but 36 local First Nations men and women are receiving volunteer training to help sustain the program locally after the visits.
Each community is benefitting with at least two days of clinics, upskill sessions and a full equipment kit for ongoing activity.
“Netball Queensland has an extensive history working in partnership with Cape York communities to grow participation in netball,” said Glenn Dennis, Netball Queensland’s General Manager – Netball.
“One of the keys to sustaining this program long-term is making it easy to run and adaptable to each unique environment. The new Woolworths NetSetGO format supports that flexibility and will be a focus in volunteer training.
“Rather than simply rolling in and out, we’ve worked closely with local organisations to understand how sport happens in each place - who delivers it and where - so the program is optimised and low burden for volunteers.
“NQ is proud to have the opportunity to partner with Unilever and the Confident Girls Foundation on this important project.”
The grant was made possible through a national campaign by Unilever, in partnership with Woolworths, which saw 10 cents from every OMO and Rexona product sold at Woolworths between 22–28 May 2024 donated to the Confident Girls Foundation. Netball SA was also a successful recipient of this funding.
