Compared to last year’s tournament, the number of north Queensland teams who’ll take part in the four-day competition has more than doubled, with 26 teams from eight different associations registering.
That is up significantly from the 12 teams from north Queensland that took part in the 2022 Junior State Age event.
“We are thrilled to see the increased participation from north Queensland teams,” Netball Queensland General Manager of Netball Glenn Dennis said.
“The opportunity to play this year’s Junior State Age event in Townsville shows Netball Queensland’s commitment to giving regional associations the opportunity to take part in these competitions and we’re delighted so many young athletes will be competing.
“Our thanks and gratitude go to Townsville City Netball Association for their support and hard work to ensure the event will be a huge success.
“I wish all those taking part the best of luck and hope the experience only strengthens their love for netball.”
Despite the competition moving outside of south-east Queensland this year, there has also been an increase in participation from the Metropolitan North and Logan/Gold Coast regions for this year’s event.
In total 220 teams have registered to compete, including six boys teams, allowing netballers aged 12-14 years to showcase their talent and develop their ability.
Netball Queensland acknowledges the support of presenting partner Nissan as well as a grant received from Townsville City Council to bring the event to the city.
As well as the on-court action, the event will have plenty to keep participants, officials and spectators entertained including activations by Netball Queensland partners Mizuno, HART Sport, Valour, Woolworths, AV Jennings and Containers for Change as well as a chill-out zone and food vendors.
For those unable to attend the championships, Kommunity TV will live stream the tournament allowing fans and families alike to enjoy the competition no matter where they are.
