MORE than a thousand young Queensland netballers will head to the Gold Coast in September with the city announced as host of Netball Queensland’s Primary Schools Cup.
The 2023 tournament will be held on September 16 and 17 at the Hinterland District Netball Association (HDNA) at Firth Park in Mudgeeraba.
The two-day tournament is open to all primary school-aged participants in Queensland and will be held with the support of the HDNA, City of Gold Coast and Major Events Gold Coast.
“Netball Queensland’s Primary Schools Cup is one of the most anticipated events on the annual netball calendar with hundreds of players from right across the state coming together to compete with great team spirit,” Netball Queensland CEO Kate Davies said.
“Participants are supported by scores of umpires, coaches, teachers, volunteers and spectators who – alongside Netball Queensland staff – help deliver a fantastic experience.
“This event would not be possible without the support of Hinterland District Netball Association, the City of Gold Coast and Major Events Gold Coast.
“The Gold Coast is renowned nation-wide for hosting great sporting events, from the grassroots to the elite, and we are thrilled to be partnering again with the city to deliver another great Primary Schools Cup.”
The Gold Coast provided the winners of the 2022 Primary Schools Cup gold medal, won by Mudgeeraba’s Somerset College Spartans, and Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick said it was great to see the tournament returning to the city.
“Major Events Gold Coast welcomes the ongoing partnership with Netball Queensland, and we are pleased to support the Primary Schools Cup again in 2023 and the growth of the sport both here on the Gold Coast and nationally,” Ms McMcormick said.
“Our city is perfectly placed to host mass participation sporting events like this one with a range of venues and facilities to suit all sporting codes and a destination that gives participants and their supporters plenty to do in between their matches.
“We are looking forward to welcoming more state and national netball events to the Gold Coast.”
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he was delighted to welcome the thousands of players, officials and spectators to the city with an eye to it being the first of many netball events held in the region.
“Hosting this incredible school-based tournament at Firth Park is fantastic,” said Mayor Tate.
“Council has agreed to a $5 million upgrade to these netball facilities as we are determined to continue to secure events like the Primary Schools Cup.
“To have 3000 participants and spectators underscores the value of major events for our city. I wish sponsors, officials, and players the very best and can’t wait to see the new world-class facilities come online.”
