Now in its seventh year, the Primary Schools Cup is a Netball Queensland initiative giving students in Years 4 to 6 the chance to experience competitive netball in a fun, safe and inclusive environment. This year, 84 teams representing 55 schools from across Queensland will contest 466 matches across three divisions: Championship (35 teams), Challenge (29 teams) and Development (20 teams).
The breadth of participation reflects the reach of the competition, with 28 Brisbane schools, 16 from the Gold Coast, five from the Sunshine Coast, four from the Darling Downs/Ipswich region and one school travelling from Wide Bay-Burnett.
As always, there will be plenty of on-court highlights, including the awarding of the Olivia Douglas Memorial Award to the Most Valuable Player in the Championship Grand Final. Introduced in 2019, the award honours the memory of Olivia Douglas, a young Gold Coast netballer who tragically passed away in 2018 while travelling to the Primary Schools Cup.
This year’s event is supported by Logan City Council, who have generously contributed $15,000 in sponsorship to help bring the competition to life.
Primary Schools Cup will also see the continuation of Netball Queensland’s Green Wristband campaign, reminding all attendees that some officials are under 18. Respect for umpires remains at the heart of the game, and this initiative reinforces the safe, positive environment netball is proud to uphold.
Netball Queensland partners will also bring plenty of off-court action to the event with Tribal Sport, HART Sport, Mizuno, Ray White Queensland and Baskin Robbins all getting involved.
