SOME very clean pooches have played their role in helping the Monto Netball Association make history at this week’s Senior State Age Event on the Sunshine Coast.
Among the thousands of players, coaches, supporters and officials who will descend on the Sunshine Coast Netball Association for the four-day event is the Under-15 Monto Minnies team.
This will be the first time Monto, from the North Burnett Region, has sent a time to State Age.
To help raise funds to pay the costs for the 10 athletes as well as coach, manager and umpire to make the trip to Maroochydore the team held a dog wash, using a donated bath and supplies from a local business.
It was just one of the ways the team has worked to realise their goal of competing at this weekend’s event.
“We also were on the Monto Race Club's ticket scan gate the Saturday before the Dog Wash,” Monto Netball Association president and U15s coach Taylah Steger said.
“We have had two number boards running since January and we were lucky enough to receive several sponsorships from local businesses.
“The girls are so excited to be going down to the Sunshine Coast this weekend. As the coach, watching this group of young athletes grow each and every training and game day has been so exciting to see.”
Monto won’t be the only new faces taking part this weekend, with Dalby Netball Association competing for just the third time ever and first since 2018.
Nanango and District Netball Association will also be represented at State Age for the first time in eight years.
The four-day event, supported by Sunshine Coast Council, features girls’ teams representing a Netball Queensland member association in 15U, 16U and 18U age grades.
This year’s event also has seven boys’ teams competing in the senior boys’ grade.
