THOUSANDS of Queensland’s rising stars are preparing to gather at Pine Rivers Netball Association, Lawnton for the inaugural Junior Nissan State Age championships.
Running from Saturday, July 2 to Tuesday, July 5, State Age provides players in age categories 12-14 years the opportunity to compete for their association in a bid to be crowned age champion.
Competitions Lead of Netball Queensland, Luke Asi, said a whopping 50 associations would be participating at the Les Hughes Sporting Complex, Lawnton.
“We are expecting up to 20,000 participants and spectators to attend across the four days of competition,” he said.
Asi said it was crucial to remember the championships was not a selection event, rather it is held with a focus on participation.
“There is a misconception that this is a pathway to high performance, but it is not,” he said.
“This is a major participation, community-based state competition for players aged 12-14 who are representing a Netball Queensland member association at the highest representative level. It’s open for anyone from the community so we encourage the general public to head along and support the event.”
Special thanks goes to Moreton Bay Regional Council for its support of netball, and to Pine Rivers Netball Association for hosting.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said this was a great opportunity for local businesses to make the most of 20,000 traveling players, coaches, and parents who’ll visit the region as a result.
“Moreton Bay is no longer a sleeping giant of the South East Queensland tourism scene with 4.3 million holiday makers visiting in 2021 to check out our pristine coastlines and our stunning hinterland, and everything in between,” he said.
“There are so many great natural experiences to have in Moreton Bay from whale watching to exploring the many rock pools, beach 4WDing and camping and so much more.
“If you like your home comforts then there are plenty of options to wine and dine your way through Moreton Bay’s cafe and restaurant scene from the Redcliffe foreshore to the Ocean View winery and all the quaint little bed and breakfast towns along our hinterland trail.
“We have 43 free community events across this coming financial year as well as our signature Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival and others, and plenty of elite sports events from A-League action to NRL blockbusters.
“There’s plenty to do and see while you’re here so I urge all participants to check out what’s on offer at the www.visitmoretonbayregion.com.au website.”
