After an emphatic start to the season in Mackay, claiming two wins and a draw, a bruising second round in Rockhampton told a different story, with United managing just a single victory across three matches.
Those results have United sitting second on the ladder behind Capricorn Claws heading into their home stand in Townsville.
The Rockhampton trip was compounded by injury.
Midcourter Jess Freeman was ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL injury, while captain Claudia Heath has undergone meniscus surgery.
"We had a few injuries for round two, so we were in a bit of a tricky place," United Head Coach Rachel King said.
Heath remains hopeful of returning to the court before the season concludes in Cairns, and although sidelined, her influence on the group has not wavered.
"She is an incredible human," King said.
"She's in and around the environment every training session, still turning up, supporting her teammates and doing everything she can from an off-court perspective.
"Her leadership off the court is just as important as it is on the court."
To reinforce the roster, United have brought in Erin Bloor and Charlie Duke as replacement players for the injured duo.
Bloor, a former New South Wales under-19 representative with NSW Premier League experience, has settled seamlessly into the young midcourt group, adding valuable experience and composure.
Duke - a schoolteacher and Queensland First Nations representative - brings a calming influence King believes will slot straight into the squad's culture.
"Nothing really bothers her," King said. "She's just an incredible leader."
Excitement in the Townsville community continues to build around the round, with more than 300 tickets already sold for the weekend and more expected before Saturday's opening whistle. That home crowd support, backed by Townsville City Council and a strong sponsor network that includes a recovery partner and sports psychologist, has become a hallmark of United's environment.
"You just kind of lift to that new level," King said of playing in front of family and friends.
With the trip to Cairns now just a month away, King has set her sights on an achievement United have never before managed – winning all three matches across a single Ruby North round.
"We are aiming for three from three at home," she said.
"No better time to do it, especially being at home."
