IT is with great sadness that Netball Queensland acknowledges the passing of legacy life member Helen Stevens.
A stalwart of the Downey Park Netball Association from its establishment in 1974, Stevens had a long involvement in Brisbane netball as a player, administrator and supporter.
A defender with a reputation for shutting down the opposition’s best attacker, Stevens represented Brisbane in the early 1940s and also represented Queensland during her playing career.
Stevens was the manager of Queensland’s State Open and Junior teams for many years, including a 1984 team which was entirely drawn from Downey Park.
Future Australian captain Vicki Wilson was part of that squad along with fellow Diamonds Liz White and Janelle Soden.
Well-liked by the state team players, Stevens was renowned for being very organised and meticulous in her preparation.
Stevens also held the role of secretary at Downey Park from 1987 to 1989 and then treasurer from 1990 to 1991.
Stevens made lifelong friendships through netball, while her daughter Vicki and granddaughter Natashawould also represent Queensland.
A regular attendee of Queensland Firebirds matches, not even a move to Tasmania five years ago prevented Stevens from following her beloved team – attending Gretel Bueta’s 100th national league appearance against Collingwood in Hobart last year.
Netball Queensland’s thoughts are with Stevens’ family at this difficult time.
